Mukoviszidose e.V., the German CF association, finances Scientific Projects in the Field of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) - Call 2010

Financial Support of Scientific Projects in the Field of Cystic Fibrosis (CF)

Mukoviszidose e.V.

Mukoviszidose e.V. provides funding exclusively for projects in the sector of CF, which investigate the implementation of findings from basic CF-related research in clinical applications and vice-versa (translational research). In this way, Mukoviszidose e.V. aims to bridge the gap to a cystic fibrosis therapy for tomorrow (prevention, diagnosis, therapy), in which basic research scientists and clinical officers from all disciplines cooperate in developing new methods for hospital applications and observations of patient reactions are reflected in laboratory work. Support is given in the following fields according to a three-tier model: Special focus funding in special subject areas, start-up support and financial support for young academics.

Special subject areas are:
• Clinical trials to improve diagnosis and therapy of chronic infections of the respiratory tract, of disturbances in growth and development and of related secondary diseases (e.g. diabetes, osteoporosis, liver complaints)
• Compensation of the basic defect by way of substances that reinforce the residual function of CFTR and/or regulate alternative ion channels
• Development of new anti-infective and anti-inflammatory drugs
• Development of animal models

The amount of financial support for 2010 to 2012 will be

1.8 Million Euro

The process of submitting applications and their approval is conducted by Mukoviszidose Institute gGmbH (MI), Bonn, the research and development arm of the German Cystic Fibrosis Association Mukoviszidose e.V. and consists of two steps: submission of a project outline as initial application (step I) and - if evaluated positively by the FGM (The German Research Community for CF) -submission of a detailed application (step II) which is evaluated by external experts.
