The proposed project will be implemented through a series of five phases. Each phase will be subject to an evaluation with documented successful outcome prior to advancement to the next phase.

• Renovate and furnish a wing of the Children’s Republic Hospital in Tbilisi to create a specialized (9 bed) CF clinic and diagnostic laboratory

• Evaluation

An existing empty wing of the Children’s Republic Hospital will be renovated to create 10 patient rooms with private bath and adjoining rooms for parents of the juvenile patients, a physiotherapy center and diagnostic laboratory equipped with basic start-up equipment and supplies will be established. Facilities of the clinic, as the physiotherapy room will also be available for other patients from the hospital

• Educate and train a Georgian specialized clinical team to staff and operate the CF clinic and outreach program

CFW will send a group of (1) CF Specialized clinicians, (1) CF Nurse, (1) CF Nutritionist and (1) Physiotherapist to Georgia to train the future clinic staff and evaluate the needs for medication and additional laboratory and technical equipment not provided in phase I.


A database will be created from intake forms filled out by persons who have been diagnosed with CF to build the Georgian National CF Registry.


A Process Evaluation will be done to determine effective import and distribution methods in the delivery of free medication to persons with CF using the pancreatic enzyme, Creon.


Manuals will be created from appropriate educational sources of current information in the treatment of CF for both patients and medical professionals determined by the medical team participating in Phase II. These manuals will be offered free at the Georgian National CF Center printed in the national language. The Ministry of Health will also distribute informational manuals to all hospitals and clinics throughout Georgia.

Using the data provided by the CF specialized team in phase II, CFW will work to equip / improve the existing microbiology laboratory of the hospital and train a technician in diagnostic procedures and optimal microbiology. All departments of the hospital will benefit from the improved lab, e.g. the new pulmonary testing materials. In the clinic there will be a sweat test machine.

CFW uses contacts to raise money and materials. The medical professionals will work with international CF specialist to list the necessary equipment. The hospital provides the basic laboratory (already existing).

• Supply CF patients all technical equipment, education and medication necessary to improve their treatment methods


• Develop an outreach program that will ensure all patients in Georgia have access to trained specialists, treatment and current information and medication


• Host an annual Georgian educational CF conference to increase awareness in the medical, lay and government society of Georgia

CFW will work to negotiate access to necessary medications and technical equipment through established networks among suppliers and Pharmaceutical organizations.


An “out reach“ program will be established by means of creating a mobile clinic in collaboration with other local NGO’s (the SOCO Foundation) to travel throughout Georgia reaching those people who are unable to access the clinic in Tbilisi. Collection for diagnostic determinations will be available as well educational information and supplies to fill prescriptions of the diagnosed patients.

CFW and CF Foundation of Georgia will host the first annual educational seminar in Tbilisi with both lay and medical topics being covered. Local media, brochures and clinical staff will advertise this conference.

• Outcomes Evaluation An Outcomes Evaluation program will be developed at the end of phase II as CF patients begin to utilize the clinic and diagnostic center. The evaluation will be conducted throughout phases III, IV and V and continue through the Georgian National CF Center’s first year of operation. This evaluation will be a final resource for implementing of similar projects in developing countries worldwide.
The Outcomes Evaluation will determine the following:
• Strengthen existing services.
• Target effective services for expansion.
• Identify staff and volunteer training needs.
• Develop and justify budgets.
• Prepare long-range plans.
• Focus the CF Foundation Board of Directors and the Medical specialized team’s attention on programmatic issues.
