Interesting Facts about Teen CF Nutrition

Malina Boone, USA

The teen years, present an array of physical and emotional changes within the body. CF affects people differently. The basic problem in CF is an error in the salt and water exchange in some cells. This causes the body to make thick, sticky mucus, which clogs the lungs and leads to infection. The body needs more calories to fight infection. It can be difficult for teens with CF to eat enough in a day to meet their needs, especially when they aren't feeling well. Many teens with CF, need 30-50% more calories than other teens. That equals out to be 3000-5000 calories daily. A well balanced high-calorie diet is important for proper growth and weight.

Protein: The amount of protein needed daily is 15-20% of your total calories. Protein is found in meats, beans, eggs, milk and milk products. Foods high in protein are often rich in vitamins, minerals, and fats.

Iron: You need more iron during puberty, when your muscle and blood volume increases. Meats, fish, oatmeal and raisins have lots of iron.

Calcium: The body needs more calcium when bones are growing. CF related malabsorption means less vitamin D is absorbed, so less calcium is absorbed. Milk and milk products are great sources for vitamin D and calcium.

Zinc: Zinc helps immune function, growth and wound healing. Nuts, meats and seafood have lots of zinc.

If prescribed, enzymes are needed to help absorb and digest food. Without them, it may be more difficult to gain height and weight. Nutritional supplements may be necessary, if the calorific intake is not being met. Tube feedings, are also another way to add extra calories. These may be options, that your CF provider or dietician may discuss with you. How you care for your body now, affects the rest of your life.
